The message was clear! Tracy was not stepping foot on a campsite unless she was comfy. The obvious choice was a campervan but we couldn't afford to have an expensive 3rd vehicle parked on the driveway for much of the year, it had to function as my daily driver and also I was nervous about driving a big van.
So we opted for a VW Caddy and worked out that with the seats pushed forward there was enough length in the back for a decent sized bed. So we bought one...
Unfortunately the VW Caddy SWB doesnt have any recesses in the van walls for the windows to sit in. So adding a window means it had to be glued to the surface of the side of the van, which we felt would look a bit strange.
So maybe even stranger, I decided porthole windows would look absolutely fine and we fitted x2 to each side....
We experimented with lots of layouts. We knew a side-facing sofa gave the best 'feel' when sitting in the van but at the time I couldnt figure out how to make the furniture so we opted for a more traditional forward facing seat - rock n roll style with the frame made out of extruded aluminium. It worked well and we had great fun travelling the UK and France!
We eventually sold the Caddy, I had grown more confident driving vans so we decided to convert a Transit Custom panel van, we named her Gueneviere. We learnt a lot about van conversion on this one but the niggles of front facing seats and a 'cramped' interior wouldnt go away. We really wanted to give the side-sofa layout a try!
During COVID there was time to take on another project. This time we'd do it 'our way'. We traded for a beautiful metallic blue Transit Custom - BlueBell. We converted the van and this time, after many prototypes, fitted a full length side-sofa that folded out to make a bed and kitchen unit the opposite side. We went for a campervan fridge which we fitted at seat level so we wouldnt have to kneel on the floor to get to it. Toilet sits opposite under a lid on a gas strut.
Having created full drawings for the furniture, We sold Tracy's car and bought a VW T5 Caravelle to convert and to see if it would suit our furniture layout. It did!
We then took the plunge and started Cwtchy Campers operating out of a portacabin in the garden.
We've kept to the basic furniture plan but improved quite a few things over the last couple of years including a move to a drawer fridge which provides additional worktop and an even more open-plan feel to the van.
We supply a standard side-sofa layout with the furniture pre-assembled, painted / stained / varnished and pretty much ready to install and use. Furniture and cushion colours chosen by you.
We want our furniture to be the easy part of converting a van and designed to be convenient to use and to create a unique spacious and open-plan interior - not crowded out with cabinets and cupboards.
